Cruising Milford Sound has been a tourist tradition in Fiordland for a long time and viewing the fiord from a boat is an amazing way to get up close with their magnificent cliff walls, waterfalls, seals and occasionally dolphins and penguins. Don't be put off by wet weather. The fiords are just as beautiful in the rain, if not more so, because of the tremendous temporary waterfalls.
Milford Sound day cruises
Years ago, you could expect to feel like you had the whole of Milford Sound to yourself. It's not quite the same today however. The fiord is still as beautiful, but there are many competing cruise boats, with a number out on the fiord at any one time. Drive to Milford Sound and hop on a day cruise; there are plenty going, and because there are several operators, prices are often competitive. Alternatively, book a package that includes your transport to Milford Sound from Te Anau.
If you travel with Southern Discoveries, you can visit their underwater Milford Discovery Centre, an under-water sea observatory enabling you to see the marine life of the fiord.
Milford Sound multi-day cruises
Fancy sleeping soundly in a sound? An overnight cruise in Milford is a special experience, on comfortable boats with warm cabins and good food. These cruises provide opportunities for fishing and kayaking from the boat, and then eating what you've caught with a good bottle of wine. Choose a large boat for a more sociable experience with more leg room, or a small boat for a more intimate experience and personal service.
